Soft and versatile flour tortillas perfect for transforming everyday meals into delicious, satisfying wraps, snacks, or plant-based dishes. These homemade tortillas offer a tender texture and mild taste, ideal for various recipes and dietary preferences.

Ingredients

Scale

Main Ingredients

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon natural baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 2 tablespoons vegetable oil
  • 3/4 cup warm water

Instructions

  1. Mix the Dry Ingredients: In a large mixing bowl, combine the all-purpose flour, natural baking powder, and salt. Stir until evenly blended to ensure consistent texture and rise in your tortillas.
  2. Add Oil and Warm Water: Pour in the vegetable oil and warm water gradually while stirring with a spoon or your hands. The warmth activates the baking powder and helps form a soft dough.
  3. Knead the Dough: Transfer the dough to a lightly floured surface and knead for 5-7 minutes until smooth and elastic. If sticky, sprinkle a little more flour, taking care not to add too much to keep tortillas soft.
  4. Rest the Dough: Cover the dough with a damp cloth and let it rest for at least 30 minutes. This relaxes the gluten, making it easier to roll out thin tortillas.
  5. Roll Out the Tortillas: Divide the dough into small equal-sized balls. Using a rolling pin, flatten each ball into a thin circle about 6-8 inches in diameter, dusting lightly with flour to prevent sticking.
  6. Cook on a Hot Skillet: Heat a dry skillet over medium-high heat. Cook each tortilla for about 30 seconds on one side until bubbles form, then flip and cook the other side for another 30 seconds. The tortillas will have golden spots and remain tender.
  7. Keep Warm and Soft: Stack cooked tortillas on a plate and cover them with a clean kitchen towel to keep warm and maintain softness until serving.

Notes

  • Use warm water to activate natural baking powder and ease dough handling.
  • Do not over-flour while rolling to avoid tough tortillas.
  • Rest the dough for improved elasticity and smoother tortillas.
  • Ensure the skillet is hot for quick cooking and proper browning without drying out the tortillas.
  • Cover tortillas immediately after cooking to retain moisture and softness.
