Ingredients
For the Patties
- Plant-based ground beef substitute, 1 lb (450 g)
- Plant-based breadcrumbs, 1/2 cup
- Onion, finely chopped, 1 medium
- Garlic, minced, 2 cloves
- Vegetarian Worcestershire sauce (natural), 2 tbsp
- Salt and pepper, to taste
For the Mushroom Gravy
- Mushrooms, sliced, 8 oz (225 g)
- Onion, sliced, 1 small
- Plant-based butter, 2 tbsp
- Vegetable broth, 1 1/2 cups
- Apple cider vinegar, 1 tsp
- Vegetarian Worcestershire sauce (natural), 1 tbsp
- Natural gelling agent, 1 tsp
For Garnish
- Fresh herbs such as thyme or parsley, chopped, 2 tbsp
Instructions
- Prepare the patties: In a large bowl, mix the plant-based ground beef substitute with plant-based breadcrumbs, finely chopped onions, minced garlic, vegetarian Worcestershire sauce (natural), salt, and pepper. Gently combine the ingredients until just mixed. Form the mixture into 4 to 6 oval-shaped patties, pressing lightly to ensure they hold together.
- Cook the patties: Heat plant-based butter in a skillet over medium-high heat. Add the patties and cook for about 4 minutes on each side until browned and cooked through. Transfer the patties to a plate and set aside.
- Make the mushroom gravy: Using the same skillet, sauté sliced mushrooms and onions in plant-based butter until golden and fragrant. Stir in vegetable broth, apple cider vinegar, and vegetarian Worcestershire sauce (natural). Sprinkle in the natural gelling agent while stirring continuously to thicken the gravy. Cook for 3 to 5 minutes until the gravy is silky and smooth.
- Combine and simmer: Return the cooked patties to the skillet, spoon the mushroom gravy over them evenly. Lower the heat and let simmer gently for 10 minutes to allow the flavors to meld beautifully.
- Serve warm: Garnish with fresh herbs such as thyme or parsley. Serve your Salisbury Steak hot with your favorite sides like mashed potatoes (plant-based), polenta, or steamed vegetables for a comforting and satisfying meal.
Notes
- Do not overmix the patties to keep them tender.
- Searing the patties before simmering adds a rich caramelized flavor.
- Use fresh mushrooms for a fuller taste and better texture in the gravy.
- Wrap leftovers well to prevent drying out.
- Adjust the amount of natural gelling agent carefully to reach your preferred gravy thickness.
