Description

This Southern Green Beans recipe offers a quick and flavorful side dish featuring fresh green beans sautéed with savory smoked turkey bacon, aromatic herbs, and a splash of apple cider vinegar. The dish balances smoky richness with bright, tangy notes, making it a wholesome, vibrant addition to any meal.

Ingredients

Scale

Vegetables

  • 1 lb fresh green beans, trimmed
  • 1 medium onion, diced
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced

Proteins

  • 4 oz smoked turkey bacon, chopped into bite-sized pieces

Herbs and Seasonings

  • 1 tsp fresh thyme, chopped
  • 2 tbsp fresh parsley, chopped
  • Salt, to taste
  • Black pepper, to taste

Liquids and Oils

  • 2 tbsp olive oil
  • 1 tbsp apple cider vinegar (natural)
  • 1 tbsp vegetarian Worcestershire sauce (natural)

Instructions

  1. Prepare the green beans: Wash the fresh green beans and trim off both ends. Blanch the beans in boiling water for 3 to 5 minutes until tender-crisp, then immediately transfer them to ice water to stop the cooking process and preserve their bright color.
  2. Cook the smoked turkey bacon: Heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add the chopped smoked turkey bacon and cook until crisp and browned. Remove the bacon from the pan and set aside, leaving the rendered fat in the skillet.
  3. Sauté the aromatics: In the same skillet with the bacon fat, add the diced onion and sauté for 3 to 4 minutes until soft and fragrant. Add the minced garlic and cook for an additional 30 seconds to release its aroma.
  4. Combine and season: Return the cooked smoked turkey bacon to the skillet along with the blanched green beans. Toss everything together and pour in the apple cider vinegar (natural) and vegetarian Worcestershire sauce (natural). Sprinkle the chopped fresh thyme and parsley over the top, then taste and season with salt and black pepper as desired.
  5. Simmer briefly: Lower the heat to medium-low and let the ingredients mingle for 5 minutes, stirring occasionally. Once heated through and flavors are well combined, remove from heat and serve.

Notes

  • Trim green beans evenly for uniform cooking and appearance.
  • Do not overcook the green beans to keep them tender-crisp and vibrant.
  • Ensure turkey bacon is crispy to add texture and depth of flavor.
  • Use fresh herbs like thyme and parsley for the best brightness and color.
  • Adjust vinegar and seasoning levels to suit your personal taste.
